Why Buy Used Disc Golf Discs?
If you've ever watched a seasoned player pull a perfectly beaten-in disc from their bag and throw the smoothest hyzer flip you've ever seen, you already know the secret: some discs just get better with use. Used discs — or as we like to call them, experienced discs — aren't second-rate. They're broken in, flight-tested, and ready to perform in ways a brand-new disc simply can't.
At Top Tier Disc Golf, we carry a carefully curated selection of used discs because we believe every player deserves access to great plastic at a fair price. Whether you're building your first bag, experimenting with new molds, or hunting for that out-of-production gem, used discs open up possibilities that the new disc wall can't always offer.
The Real Advantages of Throwing Used Plastic
New discs are great, but they come with a break-in period. A fresh overstable driver might fight out of every line you put it on for the first few months. A used version of that same disc? It's already seasoned. The plastic has relaxed, the flight has mellowed, and you can trust it to hold the lines you actually throw on the course.
Here's what makes experienced discs worth considering:
Predictable flight paths. A disc that's been thrown for a season has settled into its true flight characteristics. What you see is what you get — no surprises, no waiting for it to break in.
Budget-friendly way to experiment. Curious about a Buzzz but not sure it fits your game? Grab a used one for a fraction of the price. If you love it, you know exactly what to buy new. If not, you're not out $20+.
Access to retired and rare molds. Some of the best discs ever made aren't in production anymore. The used market is where you find those discontinued gems — first-run stamps, old-school Champion plastic Rocs, or that one Destroyer run everyone swears flies different.
Better for beginners. New players often struggle with overstable discs because they don't have the arm speed yet. A gently used disc in lighter weight and worn-in plastic will fly straighter and farther, building confidence instead of frustration.
How to Shop for Used Discs
Not all used discs are created equal. Here's what to look at when you're browsing:
Condition ratings matter. At Top Tier, we rate our used discs honestly so you know exactly what you're getting. A disc rated 8/10 might have minor scuffs but flies like new. A 6/10 has some battle scars but could be the perfectly seasoned understable driver you've been looking for.
Check the weight. Used discs come in whatever weight they were originally purchased at. If you're a newer player, look for discs in the 165-172g range for drivers — they'll be easier to get up to speed. For putters and midranges, max weight (173-175g) is usually the way to go regardless of experience level.
Know what plastic ages how. Premium plastics like Champion, ESP, and Gold Line hold their stability longer. Base plastics like DX, Pro-D, and K3 beat in faster. A used DX Leopard will fly significantly more understable than a used Champion Leopard with the same amount of wear. Use this to your advantage.
Think about what slot you're filling. Don't just buy a used disc because the price is right. Think about what's missing from your bag. Need a straight-flying midrange? An understable fairway for turnovers? A reliable approach disc? Shop with purpose and you'll build a better bag, faster.
Best Used Discs for Beginners
If you're just starting out, here are the types of used discs that will help your game the most:
A broken-in putter for approach shots and learning to putt. Look for an Aviar, Luna, or Wizard in base plastic. These fly dead straight and teach you clean release angles.
A seasoned midrange in the speed 4-5 range. A used Buzzz, Mako3, or Hex that's been thrown for a season will fly beautifully straight with minimal fade — exactly what a new arm needs.
A lightly worn fairway driver in the speed 7-9 range. A used Leopard, River, or Crave will give you real distance without demanding perfect form. Skip the speed 12+ drivers for now — they'll only hold you back.
