★ Designer's notes
Red Lodge Mountain — a Top Tier design.
Red Lodge Mountain is our home-designed alpine layout. 18 holes routed through the ski area's summer terrain, sitting at ~7,000 ft base with real vertical, real conifer, and a 5.0 scenic rating from UDisc's community — perfect on the scale. Moderate–hard difficulty, roughly 2h 17m to play, and the kind of scenery that makes bad rounds forgivable.

The Shaft MOST PLAYED
12 holes · Easy · Scenic 4.3 · ~1h 2m · 1.1k+ rounds tracked

Gear guide
Two bags for two courses.
The Shaft plays in town at ~5,500 ft — bump every disc DOWN a hair. Red Lodge Mountain sits at ~7,000 ft, and the elevation change is real: thin air means less resistance for the airfoil to grip, so overstable discs fade harder and earlier than you're used to. Read our altitude bag guide for the full theory.
For Red Lodge Mountain (7,000 ft)
Neutral picks and one wind disc.
Leave the Firebirds. Bring Innova Teebird and Wraith, Discraft Buzzz and Zeus, Kastaplast Reko X, MVP Motion. Keep one overstable in the bag for exposed alpine wind — a Zone or Justice does the job without hyzering out early.
For The Shaft (in town)
Short, tight, and forgiving.
12 easy holes means putters and midranges do most of the work. Innova Aviar, Discraft Judge, Latitude 64 Pure. A Buzzz or Mako3 for the longer lines. You don't need distance drivers here.
Season prep
The Shaft plays long. The Mountain doesn't.
The Shaft is open year-round when weather cooperates. Red Lodge Mountain runs late June through early October, snow-dependent — same window as Big Sky.
The scene
Beartooth Mountains DGL & Weekly Shaft.
Red Lodge disc golf runs on two weekly leagues: the Beartooth Mountains Disc Golf League at Red Lodge Mountain (Saturdays), and The Weekly Shaft in town (Tuesdays). Behind them, Red Lodge Disc Golf — a nonprofit formed in 2025 — is growing the sport locally and organizing events. Follow Red Lodge Disc Golf on Facebook for schedules.

FAQ
Answers, straight up.
Who designed Red Lodge Mountain?
Top Tier Disc Golf designed the 18-hole Red Lodge Mountain course at the ski area — 5.0 scenic on UDisc. (The Shaft, in town, is a separate course we didn't design — but it's a favorite too.)
How does 7,000 ft altitude affect the Mountain course?
Significantly. Air is roughly 20% less dense than at sea level. Discs carry further but fade harder — thin air can't hold overstable discs up through their finish. Bring neutral-to-understable plastic and keep one wind disc in the bag. See the full altitude guide.
Does Red Lodge have a disc golf shop?
Top Tier Disc Golf is 65 miles north in Billings — an hour up 212. We ship to Red Lodge in 1–2 business days, or you can stop by the shop on the way to the mountain.
When can I play Red Lodge Mountain?
Late June through early October, snow-dependent. Same window as Big Sky Resort. The Shaft in town has a longer season.
Where can I find league schedules?
Beartooth Mountains Disc Golf League runs Saturdays at Red Lodge Mountain. The Weekly Shaft runs Tuesdays at The Shaft. Both are listed on UDisc's Red Lodge events page, and Red Lodge Disc Golf organizes the local scene.
